Tongariro National Trout Centre
Set on the banks of the Tongariro River the Tongariro National Trout Centre contains a fascinating history of the Tongariro trout fishery which they share through their ecology and sustainability education programs. There is a working trout hatchery, a Whio (Blue) Duck breeding creche (育嬰) and an aquarium gives great close up views of rainbow trout.

Museum and Visitor Centre is a 'must-see'. Enter the world of the wild trout that have made Taupo famous.

Aquarium - Hatchery
The Hatchery was the hub of the centre for many years, and although it no longer raises fish on a large scale, it still is an interesting spot to visit.

Underwater Viewing Chamber

A few steps down into the trout viewing chamber opens up a whole new world of monster trout in their element, swimming freely.

Kids Pool

Feed the trout in "kids pond" a large crystal clear pond filled with hungry trout.

Whio (藍鴨) are a protected endemic species. They are classified as nationally endangered, rare and beautiful birds.

Whio Enclosure

New Zealand’s steep mountain streams and forested rivers are far too swift and rough for most ducks. However the whio takes churning rapids, huge boulders and fallen logs in its stride. The whio has large, webbed feet to give it power in fast-flowing water, and well-developed claws for rough terrain. Even hatchlings have oversize feet and strong legs, ready to swim in swift currents and jump onto large rocks and logs.
