Bluff Hill Scenic Reserve (Walks near Invercagill)

Bluff Hill Scenic Reserve is with wonderful panoramic views and informative panels at the top of Bluff Hill.
It also provides well formed walking tracks and some historical sites...

We walked from the Stirling Point. We walked Foveaux Walkway, glory Track, and Tópuni Track

Stirling Point Sign Post - Stirling Point marks the southern end of State Highway 1. The point is memorable for the large signpost displaying distances to major cities in the world. A photograph of this signpost is a must for visitors.

Shore with wave-beaten rocks - There have been over thirty shipping disasters in and around Bluff Harbour. One of the best known was 'England's Golry', a 751 tons barque  which was  wrecked near this point in 1881.

Shaling Lookout - During the 1830's, a number of whaling stations were establised along the southern coast. Stirling Point is one of the whaling stations.

gunpit - a military site

remnants of military site

The east of the gunpit is Dog Island lighthouse. At 37 metres from ground to top, the tallest lighthouse in New Zealand.

Radar Station - Bluff Hill has always been a lookout and communication centre.

Waituna Lagoon  (Walks near Invercagill)

Waituna Lagoon and the surrounding wetlands area was one of the first in New Zealand to be officially recognised as a wetland of international importance.

A 250-metre boardwalk winds through low-growing manuka and shrubs, emerging at a viewing shelter that overlooks Waituna Lagoon.

A circular 4 km track winds its way from the shelter around the bog, past tarns and through manuka scrub and shrubs.

Sandy Point Domain  (Walks near Invercagill)

There are several walking tracks in the Domain. We walked Rover Track/Petrie's Track and Kilmock Bush Track. Also visited Oreti Beach

Rover Track/Petrie's Track is along the Oreti River...

the track is with dense forest and...

an extensive wet land on the river side...

Kilmock Bush Track features the gnarled and twisted branches of totara trees.

It looks like to enter a weird world in the movie

Branches grow out at right angles, form loops and generally exhibit shapes not normally encountered.

The convoluted(旋繞的) branches of totara take on the weirdest(怪誕的) of forms.

Oreti Beach was a key location for the film 'The World's Fastest Indian', which tells the story of Southland's motorcycling hero Burt Munro. At around 26 kilometres in length, the beach provided Munro with a testing and racing site for his modified Indian motorcycle.

The World's Fastest Indian (超速先生) is a 2005 New Zealand biographical film based on the Invercargill speed bike racer Burt Munro and his highly modified Indian Scout motorcycle.

Mores Scenic Reserve (Walks at Riverton)

We walked King's Lookout, Hilltop Lokout and Mores Coastal Loop Track

The Balance Rock in the front

Balance Rock - Weathering has caused this rock sit astop a pedestal

Waipapa Point (Walks in catlins Coastal)

Windswept trees

The lighthouse at Waipapa Point was the last of the wooden lighthouses to be built in New Zealand and dates back

to 1884.  The lighthouse was built after a tragic shipwreck just off the Waipapa Reef in 1881 with the sinking of SS Tararua, New Zealand's worse civilian shipwreck - Beyond this panel lies a treacherous reef, clearly visible at low tide. Had you stood here on 29 April 1991, you would have witnessed an historic disaster.

Slope Point (Walks in catlins Coastal)
Slope Point is the most southerly point of New Zealand’s South Island.

Windswept trees - It's usually with strong landward wind in this area.

Slope Point itself is not accessible by road but is a 20 minute walk along a track.

rolling farmland - the scene on the way to the Slope Point, the southern most point of New Zealand

SOUTHERN MOST POINT OF THE SOUTH ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND
The AA signpost at Slope Point shows the distance to the Equator and the South Pole. Always very strong wind in this area!

view from the Slope Point - the roaring wave shows the strong wind in this area....

Curio Bay Petrified Forest (walks in Catlins)

Even not at very low tide, we still could see the spectacular fossilized forest at Curio Bay coastline.

The fossils are abundant underfoot and in the cliffs.

The fossils date back about 160 million years, making it one of the unique places in the world where you can view a fossilized forest dating back to “Jurassic times”.

Fossilized trees related to the Kauri and Norfolk Pines of today

This unique Petrified Forest gives scientists an amazing insight into what forests and plant species were like 160 million years ago at a time when New Zealand was still part of the massive continent known as Gondwana.

The fossils have been exposed over the centuries as the strong wave action of the sea has eroded away the sand, clay and rocks around the silicone filled fossils. The exposed tree trunks, logs and root systems to be found on the coastal shelf make  a most spectacular sight and are well worth a visit.  A most magical experience.
